Before doge, before pepe went mainstream, Korea had Gaejuki (개죽이): a cream-colored puppy photographed mid-climb, hugging a bamboo stalk with both front paws and grinning at the camera like a person. It is one of the oldest and most beloved memes in Korean internet history, and to a whole generation of Koreans it simply is the early internet.
2001: one photograph
The original photo was taken in 2001 by a computer graphics designer, of a puppy he kept near his office. The dog climbed a bamboo stalk and held on; the shutter caught it. Years of "it's photoshopped" rumors were settled when the photographer produced alternate-angle shots proving the moment was real. The puppy itself was given away soon after the photos were taken and its fate is unknown. The photograph is what survived.
2002: DC Inside and the explosion
In 2002 the photo landed on DC Inside, Korea's most influential early internet forum, and detonated. Why it never died
